When Mom Gets Weary

My devotion running over at Proverbs 31 today is called Getting Through Another One Of Those Days.

Unfortunately, it seems I have been having a lot of "those days" recently, because living in a house filled with two teenage daughters and a pre-teen son means there is never a dull moment around here! In fact some times I find myself praying for dull moments, because I have had more opportunities to preach, teach, feel discouraged, tolerate teenage hormonal drama, and dole out punishments than seems fair for one mom. The happy days certainly outweigh the trying days, but nonetheless, those trying days can still be exhausting.

So when another one of "those days" hits, I can often find myself fighting off a severe case of maternal weariness, and maybe you can relate.

I used to think that sleepless nights with infants, daycare issues and nursing sick kids for months was the epitome of exhaustion.... but now I understand that the weight of emotional exhaustion far exceeds even the worst case of physical exhaustion. Being a parent can be down right tiring, and no matter how we treasure our little bundles of joy, we can still experience those days when we are ready to throw in the towel, or at least succumb to temporary defeat.

Whether we are struggling with toddler tantrums and diaper changes, or teenage social plans, peer pressures and busy schedules, being a mom can zap our energy physically and emotionally.

I have to be honest, there have been "those days", when I felt like just saying "yes' to every request that rolled off the lips of my children, merely because it would make life simpler.  If there were less "no's" and more "yes's", then everybody would be happy with mom all the time, and oh what a wonderful world it would be.... right?

Even though the thought of a magical paradise - where all off spring were perpetually happy and thought mom was the greatest thing since sliced bread - seems tempting at first, that is the worst place we could find ourselves in - and more importantly, our children would suffer in the long run.

When God made mothers, He had a plan. A plan to use moms to raise up every generation to love and honor their Creator. And I'm convinced that motherhood is the hardest job in the universe.

God did not just give mothers some little people who needed to be cared for, He gave them a job. A job that is in essence, a divine calling.  A calling to be the guardian of not only our children's lives, but also their hearts. A calling to raise them with values, character, integrity and boundaries, even when doing so makes us tired in more ways than one.

A calling to not only be a mother, but to be a Godly parent to the best of our ability.

Nobody will argue, that parenting can be tough, and it takes a tough heart to keep giving it your all, when your all is just about spent. It takes a lot of commitment to keep loving our children through those hard days, especially when they are not being lovable, and we are not feeling loved in return.

Yet taking a back seat in our children's lives in order to try to maintain peace and harmony in our households, is not at all what God has called us to do. His Word instructs us to seek His face and His strength, when we are feeling discouraged and weak.

We can never be perfect parents, but we can trust in the One who is. As long as we are giving it our best, and devoting our energies, or even our lack of energies, to raising healthy, happy kids in a way that would be pleasing to God, I believe with all my heart that God will one day honor that devotion and commitment.

Good morning Tracie. Great devo and post. Love those two faded Easter eggs! I love God's tender love for moms!

My girlfriend always sayds, "Motherhood is the hardest job you'll ever love." So true.

This verse always encourages me. Thankful He gently leads those who have young!

"He tends His flock like a shepherd:
He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young." Isaiah 40:11

Praying today is a refreshing day in Him for all us moms!

Hugs,
Sharon

Thank you for your devotions today. They really hit home. We have 2 teens and a 19 month old. We weren't supposed to be able to have any more kids and at times I have struggled with Gos's decision to bless us with the littlest though I love them all. It does seem like I've had a lot of "those days" recently and I am so glad to hear someone actually say they feel like giving up at times. It is nice to know my struggles are normal. I would love it if you would pray for me especially for strength for the journey. One thing I do when I am having one of those days is to remember that the current state is not permanent and then get a good night of rest. Things normally look better in the morning even if the circumstances haven't changed.

Thank you for the wonderful post today. The support is so necessary...the reminder of what God has called us to do as mothers...it is such a privilege and honor.
I pray for God to be by my side every step of the way.
I have 3 children...they are all such a blessing!

Hi Tracie, It was great to hear this first thing on Monday morning. I think the biggest lie the enemy uses on Mom's is: "you are the only one."
I had 3 teenage girls in my household not so long ago. My oldest moved out at Christmas and will be 21 on the 17th. My other two are 17 and 19, but as you say, "I have been having 'one of those days' a lot lately".
I will keep in mind your
pine straw and faded eggs today. I will be driving my daughters to and from college today since the older ones car will be in the shop.
God knew this was the day to share you 2 faded eggs.
Shalom, Deena

GREAT devo and post Tracie!! I have 5 little ones (9 years to 9 months) and agree there are no dull moments. Your words here remind me this won't end for awhile!! I think it's good to admit we get weary and recognize the fact that we can't do it all. So grateful we serve a God who can!!! And for friends and writers like you who remind us of this truth!! Blessings, Jill

God's timing is AMAZING! This post is something I will save and read as I am a parent of a very strong (willed, mindrd, confident, etc...) 15 year-old daughter. At the same time, I received a post from a friend who is struggling with her almost 18 year old son. I forwarded this on to her and hope that it comforts her as much as it did me.

God Bless,
Trina from Puyallup, WA

Oh, yes, this mama is weary. I totally agree that my tnedancy wants to "just make everyone happy". Which means not saying 'no' so often. But God wants otherwise. I am aware of that and I desire to do His will. I am so thankful for the scriptures that confirms that we are to direct and guide our children toward life with Him. I am also so thankful for His words of "you are my child and I love you" when IIIII am not feeling so loved by those I'm trying to nurture toward Jesus. We are so much better off to remember that if we seek the praise of men, we will have it (maybe) and it will be temporary. But if we seek the praise of God, it will be eternal. Thank you for this post and thank you God for us to know that we are never alone. You, Father, will never leave us or forsake us. Bless Tracie's and Proverbs 31 Ministries immeasurable more than they can ever ask or imagine!
